With 14 years years in broadcast news, Josh Helmuth is a National Murrow Award-winning news anchor who has also won Regional Murrow Awards and Emmy Awards for his storytelling. He is also the co-managing editor of Good Morning Colorado for KRDO in Colorado Springs.
Josh has worked at top stations in Kansas City and St. Louis reporting and anchoring sports and hard news after starting out as the lead editor for a large pop culture website.
The goal of this channel is to help jump-start a career for those beginning their journey into broadcasting, to help those younger journalism students get a clearer picture as to what it takes to become successful in TV news, and, possibly, have a little fun along the way.
While Josh loves him, he's not Ron Burgundy. His “rich mahogany” is running 10ks. His “leather-bound books” are punk rock concerts. His passion is news.

You guys make it look so easy lol! Love this ❤
RT and FAUX 'News' basically overlap. 'I'd rather be a Russian than a Democrat' shirts are available at finer right-wing outlets everywhere.
Those fatty watching need to get up and move.
CNN/MSNBC and their 3 year push of a fake russian dossier gets a much higher reliability score? Apparently, the pinnacle of unbiased is completely biased. That said, thanks for the info and I'll look into AdFauxntes. Unfortunately, the MSM has a major bias and agenda from their Sugar Daddy's and carry water for the alphabet swamp, just like their flying monkeys in social media, so independent media has overtaken the Guttenberg legacy tribes.
I find it difficult to criticize individuals in media, for one reason or another, perhaps purely because they have a job to protect, but, I am sorry in that I so disagree. I cannot exonerate so many media sources for the absolute bias , on all sides. It makes it so very difficult to know who to believe , where to find the truth , simple news -with no agenda. Profit is an enormous motivator and corruptor. I will investigate the sources you mention, in hopes of pure news. I am guilty, and still am, in castigating 'the media' for sabotaging our country, the world, propagating hate, racism, false news, hiding news, all that benefits their agenda, goals, and again, it is on all sides. The bias is so transparent, the inequality, one way or another - and that is not what we want - we want simple news, facts. Let the chips fall where they may.
This is beyond human capabilities. Just the lack of sleep alone is killer, let alone dancing constantly for days.
As a type 1 diabetic since i was 7,this makes my feel special.

Hi Josh, here are a few takeaways from watching this video; show a variety- keep it moving- show your depth/ range- put your best stuff at the top... With all that being said, would you mind providing some feedback on my most recent demo reel? Also, there was no mention of the proper length of a demo reel should be... What is your suggestion on that? ruclips.net/video/-cQqVZlXnZg/видео.html Your time and feedback will be greatly appreciated!
i like the anchor voice though, it makes the headlines stand out. The 60s & 70s has done off v the best tonal cadence
That is so wrong! The roots of the name go back to a French king name Louis. In French, in this name the "s" is silent which makes it LOUIE. The rest is -ville, which we all know to pronounce VILLE. Therefore, makes absolutely no sense to distort the pronunciation into Lou-ah-vul when it is clearly, historically and logically LOU-EE-VILLE, Louisville. Worst case, drop the French and say Louis-ville and you'll still be closer to the real thing. 😁 Mind that this misunderstanding is most likely due to the southern accent and all letter eating, jaw dropping speech.🙂
you realize there are so many places around the world, and not just the states, that the natives of a city pronounce it differently than others? just like new orleans or boston. what’s the point in playing semantics bro?
Great tips. Any advice for a hopeful reporter who didn't enter the field right out of college? My college degree is in Journalism, and I've taught it at the high school level for several years. Now I'd like to actually get in the game. I'll be creating my reel from scratch and I'm willing to relocate to find that first job. Any advice? (BTW...my email address for RUclips is tied to my gardening interest, hence the name. That not the one that will be attached to my reel🙂)
It's certainly tougher to put together a good reel without much experience. But not impossible! It's just going to take some good elbow grease. If it were me, I would create an impressive news related blog and/or RUclips channel. Get your reps in; get comfortable in front of the camera; show us your range as a reporter, which includes active standups and creative storytelling.
@@JoshHelmuth Thanks Josh....I'll let you know how it goes and I'll keep following for great tips!
@@shesochatty Anytime. I should add, focus on your writing. If you can prove to be a solid writer and you have good news judgement, you're easy to work with and you're comfortable on camera - you'll get hired somewhere.
And what language is that in? I mean it's not English and is not French either so I guess is rednecks trying to pronounce French while they can't even pronounce their own English.
All of this on-point. I was in TV Sports (and some news) for 30 years. The lower pay was offset by the joys of the job...until it wasn't. Very good advice!
One of the sports anchors in my Top 20 market is moving to become the news anchor. Do you think it's a cost cutting move to have a lead sports anchor become the lead news anchor?
Highly doubtful. It depends on situation and experience, but aside from the move necessitating a new contract, news anchor jobs usually pay better and that position was already accounted for in the budget.
There was a "Salad Bowl" played in Arizona in the 40s & 50s.

OMG I from Arthur Illinois me too
Those are great points, one more thing I also want to add… if you’re a sports broadcaster working in media, there’s professors out there that’ll say that you can’t be bias no matter what. Well it depends on where you’re working at, if you’re working with a television station, then yeah you can’t be bias… but if you’re working for a team (no matter if it’s in Independent Baseball, the MLB, NHL, or the USHL) you’ve actually got a bit of leeway because you’re trying to gain more listeners to check out the team, you want more people to become fans of the team you’re calling games for… and yeah, you can be bias if you’re working with a sports team doing play-by-play because if there’s something special in the game, like someone from the other team breaks the strikeout record in the league, then by all means, go ahead and mention it into your broadcast no matter what team you’re working for no matter if it’s independent baseball or the MLB! Yeah media people on the television side can’t be bias because they’re getting the highlights for a newscast, but unless you work with a local team and have a radio show, then you’ve got leeway where you can be bias
Well said, Josh, and some very good points. When I was in charge of hiring for my newsroom, it was difficult if not impossible to find candidates who were interested and keen on municipal politics and breaking news. Their resumes were heavy on sports and passion for sports. Our industry would be a better place with more people passionate about reporting news and local politics to keep those in power accountable.
Really great video Josh! Super cool how you got all those skilled folks to come in and give their experiences too with their reels, I took something from each of them :) I'm a news director at a small rural radio station, and I don't get a whole lot of help in the news business, so hearing this advice from really great reporters seems different to me, and I've got a lot of notes! I know radio and TV news demos are different, but I still feel the overall points are important no matter what news you're in. Being active vocally or visually, knowing what NOT to inlcude, making sure those stories are not too long! Showing that you can be real, provide levity, and do just different things with your best story at the top. Not talking in that news voice (for me its the radio voice :p) and getting that real genuine moment in there. Thanks so much for the help everyone!!!
Happy to help!

english is broken, someone needs to put a stop to this madness
Hey, josh, commenting on this 2 years after it got posted may be a shot in the dark, but I was thinking about adding a standup just for the reel. Is this a smart idea? I was just going to say something along the lines of "I'm Michael Orlando, and here's some of my stuff" with my email on screen. Thanks for the video, by the way! Helped a lot :)
Hey, man. I'm all for thinking outside the box. But unless it's a standup that is SUPER creative and blows me away, I would refrain from it. In my opinion, it just wastes valuable time in which your potential boss could be seeing your work. On average, people won't make it more than :45 into your reel unless they truly love you. Those first several seconds are valuable.
@@JoshHelmuth Good advice! Thanks so much. It's rare to see someone respond to comments as much as you do but I am very glad you do. You've been a real help :)

@@maranelamartireporter Sorry for the delay. I like to use DaVinci Resolve for editing, on my computer. It's free. But it's just as powerful as the editing software you would use at a TV station. If you watch RUclips videos, you can learn the basics in 1-2 hours.... I think being bilingual could certainly help you. Every city needs great bilingual reporters!... If I were you, I would start a blog, and focus on your writing. Strong writing is SO important. I would also use your camera (buy a tripod and a lav mic that plugs into your phone - very affordable off Amazon) and go out and shoot your own stories for your blog. If you can prove you can do the job, you build your skillset, and you are a strong writer, you'll get hired somewhere - better if you're flexible on where you're willing to live. Hope that helps.

If you don't know what UPI is, you shouldn't be talking about which news outlet is the most credible. United Press International is very well known wire service that's been around since the 50's. What you've failed to mention is that most News outlets are owned by multinational corporations. They don't exist to tell the news. They exist to sell ads. Thus, they are completely biased. You have to watch at least three different channels to gleen any kind of truth. By viewing one from the left, one from the right and one from the center, you may be able to know some of what is going on. None of them are trustworthy because they all lie by omission. News today is a joke.
I was with until your last line. But i can't blame you totally. Still there are good sources, but it takes a little work. Thanks
